Background: Vladimir Tretchikoff was a self taught artist who painted subjects inspired by his early life living in China, Singapore, Indonesia and later South Africa. Nicknamed the 'King of Kitsch' due to the popularity of his work with the general public and his willingness to turn his original artworks into mass produced prints. Tretchikoff's prints appear across pop-culture including being featured in Alfred Hitchcock's film 'Frenzy'.
His famous works Miss Wong and the Chinese Girl, are often referred to as 'the green lady' due to the unusual green hue Tretchikoff painted her in. The model for the piece was Monika Sing-Lee who was asked to sit for the portrait after meeting the artist whilst working in her uncle's launderette in Cape Town.
